Read The Individual Psychology of Alfred Adler (pages 208-209), edited by Heinz and Rowena Ansbacher, wherein Adler clarifies his position about the use of an experience to support a pre-existing point of view. The style of life of some individuals can result in an unconscious seeking (or allowing) of hurtful experiences to prove a belief, or gain imagined benefits. Often, however, the intensity or actual harm of the experiences are much greater than anticipated. I recall the case of an "accident prone" client who spent a great deal of time seeking ways to profit financially and emotionally from a remarkable series of mishaps. Obviously, most people who experience a trauma are not trying to "set up the situation". An examination of an individual's style of life would illuminate this possibility.
