Read The Drive for Self: Alfred Adler and the Founding of Individual psychology, by Edward Hoffman. Hoffman devotes a generous amount of space to Adler's interest in socialism and Marx, as well as his relationship with Trotsky. The comments about Max Adler (no relation) and Manes Sperber are also relevant. Although Adler appreciated many of Marx's ideas (he did not consider them unique), he published a scathing criticism of Bolshevism in "Bolshevism and Psychology" (1918). Hoffman covers this history quite comprehensively, and I cannot offer any additional information about the topics. Kurt Adler (Adler's son) authored an article, "Socialist Influences on Adlerian Psychology," that was published in the Individual Psychology Newsletter, Vol. 39, No. 1, January 1944. I would be pleased to discuss any of this material with you when you visit San Francisco, and will send an e-mail clarifying my availability.
