The quote is from Adler's "Problems of Neurosis," originally published in 1929. The context of this quote is important. Adler was describing the case of a woman who developed a guilt complex about an incident that had happened twenty-five years earlier. She then used that memory to hurt her husband and punish herself. In "The Neurotic Character," adler also states: "The neurotic uses the truth to hurt others. One will never hear agreeable truths from neurotic patients without the reaction, usually an aggravation of the suffering, manifesting itself soon." Check http://go.ourworld.nu/hstein/nc-3.htm . Essentially, the underlying motives of an individual must be taken in consideration when evaluating his behavior. Even actions that look positive on the surface, may have a hidden punitive quality. A man who is generous with his friends may be the opposite with his wife and children. Their perception of this contrast may intensify their feelings of hurt and deprivation.
