A commonly-held belief among qigong teachers and practitinoers is that moving the qi "releases" the energetic stagnancy that manifests as depression. Thus I've heard the advice that a depressed (or otherwise "mental") practitioner is wise to have a therapist for when the shit hits the fan.
As a depression sufferer, my experience has been that it does indeed release stagnant psychological (along with physical) energy. The effects for me, psychologically, have been overwhelmingly pleasant--"stuck" places, particularly in my outward life, seem to be loosening. Others' experience may be different. Physically, I've seen some old symptoms re-emerge into awareness.
