Here's my conclusion after taking a lot of time to figure out what works. All paths lead there.... I have wondered whether meditation on sad feelings in the depths of depression wouldn't just lead to worsening depression. On the other hand, I have just concluded that finding the state that leads into good mental health is key. In the process there is the chance to learn to identify thoughts and feelings, note emotions as they occur in the body, become in tuned with and tune up ones body, and so on, depending on the meditation, which is really part of becoming aware of "true self" and being in the world. Each resonates with an individual differently for different reason--it's the form they learned first, a good teacher, or just personal inclinations. And, from my experience, my mind has a mind of it's own. It evolves at its own pace, despite my attempts to push it in one direction or another. There's an innate wisdom in meditation. There are some days, weeks, months, that I might as well just balance my check book. On the other hand, if you scroll through the beginning of this message board, you will find the specific reccomendations that you are looking for.
