Thank you, Michael, for sharing your experience with this client. I am writing a book on yoga and depression to be published by Broadway Books, and, in one of the chapters on meditation, I'd like to quote from your described experience. It has been my experience that in general mindfulness-based meditation techniques can exacerbate depression and that more active forms of meditation, those using mantra and mudra and visualization, for example, work best for someone suffering from major depression or dysthymia. This seems not to be your experience with this client. I'm wondering if you have had this kind of success with other clients suffering from depression and if you have any further comments about depression and meditation, since you posted your findings here. I am not a psychologist, but am writing this book in consultation with several psychologists and yoga therapists. I am a yoga teacher and writer, and I've written frequently on the subject of yoga and mental health for magazines like Psychology Today, Yoga Journal and Yoga International. Thanks so much for your response. Amy Weintraub, MFA, RYT
