I've read much about detachment as the goal in meditation. As it is described it seems liking emotional numbing, which leads eventually to depression and anxiety. However, my experience with detachment achieved through meditation is quite a different experience. From my perspective, it must be achieved in a meditative state. When achieve, all emotions exist. However, there is a sort of removal from them while experiencing all of the intensity of the emotion. You own the emotion. It doesn't own you in a sense. It's very easy to make clear choice due to such clear observation. From my perspective there is a danger in trying to achieve detachment if it results in numbing, or a sort of rationalization that's not true to yourself. On the other hand, when I achieve the type of detachment that I describe associated with the meditative state, it's the only way to live. How close are my observations? I would love to read what others have to say about this.
