You mentioned counselling session and therefore I'm not sure as to whethert you're interested in a reply given from a Gestalt persepctive. I'll give it anyway just in case :)Well the Gestalt understanding of retroflection is: 'to do to one's self what we would like them to do to us" as well as "doing to others as we would like them to do to us". An example of this would be a client stroking her thigh while speaking or twirling her hair with her fingers . . . sort of soothing herself (indication that she perhaps would like to be soothed/supported by other people). hope this has been helpful
