sexual projection

I am extrememly interested in a case in which a young man perceived that a friend was interested in him sexually because he would pat him and assure him through gesturing that he was his friend but nothing more from what I am aware. The young man asked the friend if he was struggling with his sexual identity which seemed like an odd question to ask. Was this perhaps a form of projection? The young man went on to say he had been approached by older men when he was a child and was very sensitive to anything resembling a sexual interest in him. Any comments appreciated.
