Todd: We’re getting nowhere, and our relationship is quickly deteriorating. It occurs to me that while you and JimB are both “atheists,” I suspect that JimB may be less inclined to soften the implications of atheism; less inclined to “believe” in a unique “human agency”; and I think he’d have been less inclined to have argued a disconnect between atheism and “materialism,” certainly in the context that I was using the terms. And since JimB has alluded to my own reasoning using terms like “fantasies” & “binary judgments,” you know he’ll never see things my way. So how about this—although I’ll continue to suspect that JimB’s atheism will almost certainly blind him to certain realities, perhaps he can offer us some analysis here regarding our respective positions, displays, beliefs, etc; and perhaps he can suggest ways in which we can salvage our deteriorating relationship. What say you JimB? Send any counseling fee invoices to Todd. And BTW JimB, any chance you’d agree with the great mathematician/physicist Roger P., that conscious understanding lies beyond computable procedures, or algorithms; that all the currently known physical laws are algorithmic; and that this implies there’s more really big stuff out there we don’t yet understand/know?
