    Psychotherapy for a Cat
James Brody · 11/01/03 at 8:43 PM ET

My son has a wife who has a cat, Nikki.
Nikki is overweight by 40%, irritable, and spends her day on a cushion while looking out a glass door onto a deck.

My diagnosis is that Nikki is possibly depressed and might benefit from visuo-cognitive therapy.

I have a cat of my own, Max, who has been with me for about 3 weeks. I adopted Max from a pet store. He is 18 months old and had an "abusive" past by a large woman with three small children and two hyperactive dogs.

Max agreed to model "cat like" behaviors.

Accordingly, I have photos of Max sleeping on his back, putting one paw on a housefly but without killing it, racing at top speed after taking a dump, and batting little spheres of cat litter around my bedroom. He also sits in the sink and drinks water from a spigot.

My plan is to show Nikki the photos, she will instantly respond to these demonstrations, understand the great good sense that Max displays, and immediately adopt his behaviors.

Her present conduct is certainly not in her genes...
