The image of Cyberspace
by Tatiana Matveeva (Inity), 10/6/98
Hello:
here is a fragment from famous "russian cuberpunck' book by Sergey Lukianenko - "The Maze of Reflections", book about virtual reality and cybercpace, wonderful example of new generation of russian science fiction. Near all russian internetters and FIDOnetters are in delight from his book... and yesterday there was online-interview with Lukianenko on IRC DalNet #RusSF... It was very interesting. The "Maze of Reflections" really became a "cult book" in Russia, may be near to Neuromancer...
So here is a translation from the beginning of the book, the image of Cyberspace, named "Deep" (translation made by author himself". We think it is beautiful image... what would you say? ;-)
Sergey Lukianenko
Deep in Trouble
You wish to close your eyes. Reasonable reaction. Kaleidoscope of colours,
sparks, glimmering stars: magnificent, but you know what this magnificence is
for.
Profundity (deep). Somebody calls it depth, but I like profundity (deep) more. It's a
warning, not just a label. Beware of sharks and octopuses, of silence and
endless space, that is pressing you, and pressing, and pressing and that is
non-existent in reality.
Actually, profundity is gentle... in its own manner. It accepts anyone. You
need few efforts to dive into. But much more to reach the bottom and get back.
First of all we should remember: profundity is flat in our absence. You have to
believe and non-believe in it, both at once.
Otherwise a day will come, when you will not get back.
Sergey Lukianenko Home Page (in russian language only) is http://kulichki.rambler.ru/sf/lukian, there are also pictures of cyberspace, made by russian painters and designers...
