How Psychotherapy Works:Theory, Practice, and Research

The San Francisco Psychotherapy Research Group's Annual International Workshop will be held March 1 - 5, 1999 10:00 am until 5:00 pm at Laurel Heights Conference Center in San Francisco

This intensive week-long workshop offered by Joseph Weiss, M.D., Harold Sampson, Ph.D and Members of the San Francisco Psychotherapy Research Group

We will present the theory, research and clinical applications developed over the past 20 years by Joseph Weiss, M.D., Harold Sampson, Ph.D., and members of the San Francisco Psychotherapy Research Group.

In each morning session, participants will learn the basic concepts of Control-Mastery Theory and how these concepts illuminate the patient's psychology and the therapeutic process. Patients will use verbatim transcripts and their own process notes to study how psychotherapy works.

In afternoon sessions, participants may choose among seminars covering a variety of topics including theory, clinical applications, and research methods and findings. Participants are invited and encouraged to present their own cases.

Participants will also have the opportunity to have an individual case consultation with a Control Mastery therapist at no additional cost.

Earn 30 hours of CE credit in one exciting, informative week This workshop is pending approval by the CPAAA for up to 30 hours of Mandatory Continuing Education Credit for Psychologists (provider #SAN107). The course meets the qualifications for 30 hours of Continuing Education credit for MFCCs and LCSWs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (Board approval #PCE104). The course is also pending approval for CME credit for physicians as sponsored by the University of California School of Medicine at San Francisco (UCSF). UCSF is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME).

Participants unable to attend the whole week may make arrangements for partial attendance.

This workshop is intended for mental healt h professionals and students. It is concerned with how psychotherapy works.

The approach is based on the Control Mastery theory developed by Joseph Weiss, M.D., and empirically investigated by Weiss, Harold Sampson, Ph.D. , and the San Francisco Psychotherapy Research Group. The theory, clinical approach, and research supporting it are presented in the books The Psych oanalytic Process: Theory, Clinical Observation, and Empirical Research (Weiss, J. & H. Sampson. Guilford Press, 1986), and How Psychotherapy Works (Weiss, J. Guilford Press, 1993). We welcome new and returning participants.
