Did you notice that the oscillatory models overlap neatly with the concepts of K/r selection? Excitation (rapid population growth with little investment in offspring) in new, unstable environments; greater inhibition as waste builds or as resources thin, aka K-Selection conditions wherein things slow down, there is more investment in the fry and more formal cooperation rather than altruism.
