As the author of *Practical Magic* I spend many days in the early years with Brandler and Grinder (as did Steve Gilligan and Robert Dilts and David Gordor and others) before it received the name NLP. I saw it as an excellent articulation of transcational elements. As such, it has promise to help improve the quality of treatment given by professionals as it can increase accuracy in specifying interventions (making them easier to replicate and research). I was most interested in that angle. I found the larger social and temporal factors that effect the eitiology, continuance, and even the solutions to problems to be lacking in NLP and quite present in Erickson's work. So, as with all things, there is a limited range of applicability and within that range there are some very valuable learnings to be had.
