You are reminding us of a very important point about the therapeutic alliance, what may look like an unconnected negative interaction may in fact be a patient's only way to begin to form a relationship. The concept of testing and passive into active specifically has helped me to understand and tolerate some pretty unpleasant interactions with patients. In many cases the patient was able to use my understanding of their dilemmas concerning intimate relationships to begin to open their repertoire of relational tools too! Thanks for the reference and sharing of Steve's article.
