I'm the father of a 7 year old girl, who at home is completely normal but when we are out is well beyond shy. She was diagnosed as selective mute when she was 5. What I have observed is that she functions normally anywhere or time as long as her "little world" is not interupted. when we shop she is fine until someone interupts, she says hello to the neighbors but only when they are leaving. She is now in first grade and will answer questions (two or three words most) because she realizes that its less painful to volunteer a right answer than to be called on the spot.
