Sure it can! And such faith can be materially (pun?) helpful.

On the other hand, this may be one more adaptation. Sagan (in Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors) has some powerful images about "touching the alphas of alphas" as extrapolated from chimpanzee behavior.

A friend of mine is currently drafting some Old Testament observations about Granddad phenomena. Watch for it!
