Jim and Vic:
It's far from just a matter of intrapersonal or interpersonal. I tried to introduce the work of Robert Langs in the Nathanson Forum, but had no takers (Nathanson was willing but nobody else followed up so I let it drop). Langs looks at the communicative transactions that take place between therapist and patient, and has a great deal to say. I summarized his thinking in that forum and recommeded his workbooks as a quick way of getting some grasp of the major issues. To understand his vantage point is to realize there is a whole arena of interplay that Freud payed little attention to and that the current theories in these forums also giving very short shrift.
But I know that it's much more comfortable and economic for our neurons not to entertain too many different ideas at once!!
