Kevin - You may want to call the folks at Consulting Psychologists Press who produce the MBTI instrument 800-624-1765 (www.cpp-db.com/www.mbti.com). They can get you in touch with several vendors of MBTI qualifying workshops.
I was pleased with Otto Kroeger and associates who do workshops in the D.C. area and also for NTL.
A chestnut for learning about type is "Introduction to Type" by Isabel Briggs Myers. CPP also publishes "Introduction to Type in Organizations" and "In the Grip" (a new book that deals with the inferior functions.) All of these books are easy to read and very straight forward.
Personally I would suggest qualifying to administer the MBTI and working with it for a while. It will give you a greater insight into how it may apply in your research, as well as insight into yourself.
