"Discover," July, 1998, p. 21 describes a "mothmobile" designed by Jeff Bloomquist & Steve Bathiche. The gadget uses roaches or hawkmoths as the "mind" for a toy car. Microelectrodes read signals in the insect's muscles, the output is translated into signals that control the car engine and steering.
The eventual intended application will be servomechanisms to operate wheelchairs and other tools by perhaps signals from facial muscle in paralyzed people.
Nice going!
