The Personal Health Improvement Program is a 6 week group program for medical patients to help them cope with chronic illness, reduce pain and other symptoms, and manage stress more effectively. It was developed at Harvard Pilgrim Health Care and, through a joint venture with Procter & Gamble, is available at 25 HCO's around the country. Outcome studies have demonstrated striking reductions in patients' symptoms along with increases in functional status. Outpatient utilization in these studies decreased by 50% in the year following participation in the course. For more information, or for copies of published research on PHIP contact Marcia Orlowski at 617-859-5419 or by mail at Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, 185 Dartmouth Street, Boston, MA 02116.
