There are plenty of us who will use a theme to pump their own standing. The list_serves stormed to record volumes with surging tides about Clinton and Monica. The focus was not on the issue so much as on "winning." I could see the brownshirts marching and hear the invective that poured from "liberal" mouths, pretending to defend their freedoms to be private but actually attempting to influence legislators and newspapers. There is a peanut gallery at every show, undressed spectators at January football games -- each attempting to make the big time. DeWaal can describe chimp hierarchies. He could probably also discern a hierarcy among the fans of two battling alphas.

Evolution, genetics, and religion all elicit the same effects. So many of us want to generate bigger funnel clouds with ourselves at the center, paying little heed or even bragging about the destruction behind us.

I'm not optimistic about avoiding a mess with genes" but I've got to try. Perhaps to redeem my prior half century of laziness.
