Right on! We need the integration of previously isolated knowledge sources. That, to me is THE challenge.
In that light, I would not say that genes alone are "responsible" for natural selection. Genes are selected via phenotypes, as these operate in potentially changing, and even hostile environments.
Kill the deer and you kill its genes (unless it or a kin has reproduced, etc.). Save a deer and the deer may live to breed another day. Whether it survives depends on lots of factors; the genes are shuttled along in this only moderately successful phenotypic vessel.
I think we agree, but with perhaps more emphasis on my part for developmental pathways, through which genes are allowed or disallowed expression.
