>> If my marriage or relationship with my children were poor, then of course, the internet provides a ready excuse to withdraw even further. I'm sure that the media will loudly report that too! "Internet contributing to divorce rate".
From a sociological viewpoint that is of course absolutely true. The spreading of physical transport systems and now electronic ones gives people a wider choice of suitable partners..At one time the nature of small town life meant one would be brought up and marry somone in the local community, with little opportunity for "cheating" and little notion that there was greener grass to be had. Now, thanks almost entirely to the internet, people in the UK meet people from the US F2F, have affairs and leave their partners, for example. Would all these people have had such experiences without the tentative and anonymous first steps that the 'net allows? Maybe one day there will be some reliable statistical data that shows this.... perhaps someone might suggest a design for such an online survey :).
