I think you did answer my question, Chris. It sounds like your webcam helped you overcome feeling shy, sensitive, and worried about what others thought of you. It helped you feel more accepted and that you had an impact on others. Sounds like at least some of this happened as a result of the feedback you got from people. I find myself wondering what kind of feedback you got.
