As you may know, there are different types of sex offenders. The true pedophile is sexually attracted to children, typically within a narrow range of age or other characteristic. Psychodynamically, these individuals are usually different from adults who engage in sexual activity with their own children. The latter are generally not attracted to "children" as much as they are to specific children--their own. These cases are frequently as much about power, grief, anger, and other family dynamics as they are about sex. There are other differences between various adults who engage children sexually.
