Your early spiritual/epistemological enlightenment does make fascinating reading, but I'm not sure how it bears on my question about the quoted research. If you consider your early interest in philosophy to be a maladaptive trait, I assure you that was not at all what I meant. I was thinking more of the Kato Kaelins of the world.
