I think it's important to note that at the heart of psychoanalytic dream interpretation has always been the use of metaphor. The issue is how many of the underlyiing premises you agree with--- but there are mountains of writings within the psychoanalytic sphere.
Robert Langs, M.D. wrote a very interesting book called Decoding Your Dreams (Henry Holt and Company). He approaches dreams both from the metaphor perspective and the communicative significance in the reportings of dreams. I, of course, do understand that this publication presents a way of thinking quite different from the general tenor of this forum.
