The other day I got into little debate with one of my colleagues. I mentioned my research on the internet and my colleague's quick retort was "How do you know the people you speak to on the internet aren't lying to you?" I guess some do, and some don't, as in ftf life. I tried to convince my colleague that once you've participated in an online community for a long time, you KNOW when people are presenting their real selves rather than some online persona. You really DO get to know who people are and what their lives are about. My colleague was very skeptical of this. It's interesting that people with little experience on the internet are the most skeptical.
