Dr. Morrell: You have raised a very important issue, I think. As may be gathered from my posting above, I think that empowerment is something that we do to the client. However, it is something specific. By the attitudes we model or work to instill in the client, we teach that problems can be solved, stressors can be coped with, and that the client has it within himself/herself to do this. Rather than being the "all-knowing one with advice from on high," we guide the client to solutions (gently). One way that I do this by going through some kind of problem solving process with them and let them come up with a solution, only suggesting things as necessary.
