Fascinating story. It is similar to one I know well. In my sophomore year in high school I had a lucid dream. I asked my homeroom teacher about its meaning and then the librarian. I was only referred to the psychology section of the card catalog. In 1963 all the books there were very user-unfriendly. All but one. A little book by Jay Haley called Strategies of Psychotherapy. I read it. It had absolutely nothing to do with my dream – which I forgot anyway.

I was a math and engineering major. Six or years later (not done with a BS degree) I switch to social science (that’s another story). In 1969, Jeff Zeig and I met too. Neither of us knew or cared about a man named Milton Erickson then.

Years later. BS later. MSW later. TA later. Gestalt therapy later. And luck later, I found myself preparing to go to study with Milton Erickson. I was reading his material when I realized it was vaguely familiar to my thinking. It wasn’t until some years later when I recalled having read that book in 1963.

    I know what you mean.
