Interesting question, though a little short on details. It might be helpful to describe the setting a little more, as well what you mean by "invasive" and "probing" questioning at the "informal" gathering. Are the applicants being considered for something like high pressure sales jobs, or for high-risk counterespionage in foreign concentration camps? Also, I wonder what differences there may be between what U.S. psychologists/psychiatrists would consider proper (in occupational settings, not clinical ones) versus what British professionals and applicants expect. ... It may be said that this is a voluntary environment rather than a prison or something, and it's not a clinical or research environment. Also, may one assume that the applicants are all smart, presumably healthy folks who aren't really likely to be damaged by verbal probing? ... We sometimes overestimate the power of psychological techniques (on the other hand, you're not talking about a highly suggestive, even coercive setting such as one sees in EST or cultish settings, ARE you?). ... I'm looking forward to seeing some comments about this one.
