selecting book publisher/agent

i have a manuscript on modeling affect & emotion online, i am debating whether to publish it through the usual hardcopy channels. how did you go about selecting a publisher or finding an agent to help with that & other negotiations? secondly, how did you decide whether to publish at all? my manuscript probably appeals to a small audience so i don't know if it's worth the effort. - if it is a labor of love & the monetary return isn't important nowadays one can publish online easier & faster. But on the other hand it seems that an online offering doesn't get the same credibility.
