It is also useful to keep in mind that a "trauma" does not have to have the characteristics of an event necessary to designate criterion A for PTSD. A trauma can be "small t"--that is, any life experience that has a lasting negative impact upon self or psyche. If a client learned sometime in the past that lack of control was dangerous than the physical symptoms of a panic reaction could be greatly problematic. EMDR is best used to process experiential contributors to complaints--including past events, external and internal triggers, and to incorporate new templates of appropriate behaviors. Those complaints that are primarily organic, or are handled with simple education are not good candidates for EMDR.
