Dear Dr. Shapiro and Readers,
I believe this applies more effectively to the worried well than persons with significant developmental problems stemming from childhood trauma and destructive role models, but word on the street is that TFT (Thought Field Therapy) can lead to much cognitive reprocessing without what I, at least, would expect a therapist to do to facilitate that.
I suspect that this is because the altered state of the client allows processing that they were "almost" capable of (were it not for state-based obstacles) to proceed unfettered. This reminds me of cognitive changes that spontaneously occur in persons whose depression lifts through antidepressants without cognitive therapy. I have seen a subset of EMDR procedures without cognitive processing lead to such changes as well, though I don't know how they compare.
I have experienced such cognitive shifts myself around a complicated issue that I applied EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique, a spin-off of TFT) to.
It will be interesting to see how these "power therapy" dynamics are integrated as we learn more.
