Without commenting on your specific experience, I will make some general comments about shadowy parts of self. These comments may or may not apply in your case so you should seek consultation with a therapist who specializes in ego state therapy and/or dissociation to come to an understanding about the meaning of your experience. In general, when people look inside and see shadows, it means there is a reason why all cannot yet be clear. It is usually either: 1) the front part of the self isn't quite ready to know the back part(s) or 2) the back parts aren't sure that the front part is ready or that they may not lose something if their cover is blown, and purpose is revealed. Usually, with assistance of a qualified therapist, any distance or conflict between the front and back parts of the self can be negotiated, concerns be allayed, questions be answered, and so forth. All parts of the self are important, each is there for a good reason and has something to say. Some people can do this by journaling, but in general, if there is an experience of inner conflict between parts, a therapist may make the journey easier. Please consult a therapisit to see if the above applies in your case or not.
