To the critic above, yes I am absolutely saying that to treat phobias with EMDR one must use the appropriate phobia protocol which is substantively different from the standard emdr protocol, and is defined in Shapiro's books. Treatment fidelity is of course a relevant response to an inaccurate criticism. Much of the research on EMDR and phobias have not used the appropriate protocol. Bear in mind also that simple phobias, like a spider phobia, are relatively rare in clinical practice, and that process phobias are much more common. Naturally, a protocol that takes the process and learning history for the phobia into account is more perfectly tailored than an approach that was developed to treat PTSD.
