Thank you for your inquiry. HAP, the Humanitarian Assistance Program, is a non-profit organization formed by Dr. Francine Shapiro. It has brought volunteers -- all mental health professionals with EMDR training, to such emergency situations as the Oklahoma City Bombing, Hurricane Andrew, the Kosovo/Serbian conflict, and other international disasters such as floods, combat, etc. HAP's phone number will be posted here later. They will need donations of money certainly and I don't know what else. I'll try to post information when I can -- I'm sure they have their hands full with inquiries today. Be aware though that today is not an EMDR day. That is, in the moment of emergency, it is normal and natural for those in trauma to set aside the intensity of their pain and emotion in order to get through the experience, to survive, to function. Numbing and dissociation is okay today and in the next period of time. Some will need it more than others. We are designed that way because if those in the trauma (which is nearly all of us to a degree) attended to our shock and pain today, some wouldn't be able to function, and they have to function. Later on, after the survival/critical aspect of the emergency is over, it will be an APPROPRIATE time to deal with the pain and emotion that has been set aside. Some people do this by talking, writing, some benefit from critical incident stress debriefing, some from early EMDR. Some need EMDR later on. Some will find their trauma closets burst open, because they were already nearly full before this day. EMDR can help surely but not today. Today is for getting through, surviving, rescuing. Above all, it is for each of us to choose peace. I choose to turn to the light of God's love, and turn away from the darkness and terror that terrorists would rather we feel.
