While undergoing the training for EMDR, I never felt comfortable using physical contact to promote bilateral stimulation (e.g. tapping on knees), because it introduces a confusing and often unwelcome dimension to the therapeutic relationship. Therefore, if I do find the need to do tapping, I will use instruments such as pencils or pens to tap, and I always offer a pillow for the client to use as a physical boundary, so that they can fully concentrate on processing.
