I have had the opportunity to utilize emdr in my therapeutic work to resolve trauma. Never did I feel or think that I was relying on the authority of my therapist or the authority of a hand-waving expert therapist. I find emdr no more mystyfing than any other approaches, the information I have read was understandable enough for me and the changes, which I have read about, are an indication of further understanding and development of this therapeutic technique.
Your comment "hand-waving expert therapist" indicates to me that you may not really know enough about emdr. My therapist, by the way, never did any "hand-waving" and did not take the position of being the expert.
