This is so true. My therapist uses EMDR and other approaches. consent is obtained and we clarify options. For eg., the hand up "stop" signal was not quite suitable as I sometimes raised my hand(S) during EMDR and we had to come up with a way that my therapist would know if I was indicating stop or if I was just moving my hand for some reason unknown. In the same manner, when using any other therapy approach my therapist always tells me I can stop at anytime, it is my choice. Even if the minute before I say I want to continue my therapist will not push forward if I tell him I don't want to go further. It is respectful of me, my choices, my need to be safe and my need to experience an element of control. If my therapist is in doubt he will stop and check with me, will ask me if I want to continue. Sometimes that frustrates me, I don't want him to stop at all, but I am glad he is aware and observant enough to see signs that I may be uncertain about continuing.
