I think wishing for reassurance that the procedure will work is characteristic of people with difficult childhoods as well as others. To wonder whether something will work and remain objective and open is also the hallmark of a scientist. It is important for EMDR therapists not to guarantee that the procedure will work in a particular case, though we often have a good sense that it will work for people.
