As you note this is a state associated not only with EMDR but also with other therapies and trauma work in particular. It is commonly observed in animals as a transitory state between hyperalertness/freezing and a relaxed but alert state, and occurs when the animal does not feel in danger. This phenomenon is common in survivors of severe trauma and is discussed in the book by Peter Levine (1997): Waking the Tiger - Healing Trauma.
