Your observation that it is impossible to predict the number of sessions of EMDR (or any other psychotheapy process for that matter) is correct. As a general rule (subject to many exceptions of course) the longer the history (both in terms of when the original events took place and how long the person has been living with the effects)of struggling with the issues the more sessions of psychotherapy (EMDR or otherwise) are needed. There are, of course, many exceptions to this. I would suggest that you talk about the issue directly with your therapist if you have not already done so. There are some techniques that the therapist can employ to help you develop new resources for dealing with the material (rather than just dealing with the material with current resources)or for working on beliefs that might be getting in your way. Only you and your therapist can decide if any of these techniques might be helpful.
