No research, only solid clinical guidelines applicable to anyone (not tailored to your case): Containment skills and the ability to manage strong emotion is key. This is often accomplished with imagery. Often relaxation tapes can help. It also helps to negotiate a deal internally --- "no matter what comes up in EMDR, I'll contain it between sessions so I can function well". If that doesn't feel true, more containment work is needed before EMDR.
