Its a matter of risk. If the attempt was a while ago and lots has changed, the risk is less than if the attempt was recent and there are lots of inner struggles about blame and worth and death. Sometimes parts of self are determined to kill other parts of self ---EMDR can stir up those dynamics, so it is critical to have key parts on board with the work, and understanding that they are in the same body, parts of the same self, that all deserve compassion. That ground work must be done first for some people. But the short answer is: current risk assessment.
