This is a term from the dissociation literature, especially Catherine Fine and Rick Kluft. The idea is that for a DID client, processing all of the channels of traumatic experience, that is, Behavior, Affect, Sensation and Knowledge (BASK) simultaneously is too flooding. So one takes a fraction of it, one of those four channels if the memory is divided by those channels among alters. Division can also be temporal or otherwise. The idea is that we take a piece of it so that it is manageable.
