I have been doing EMDR since 1991, and in the first two years I almost had to give it up due to repetitive motion problems in my arm. Fortunately, the light bar became available, and now all the variations you mentioned. I use the lightbar with audio for most clients, because I think (no research here) that the auditory takes some clients deeper. I like the visual tracking so I can see their eyes-- some people are dissociative, and you can often see it in their eye movements or eye fixations. That irregular tracking can signal the need to switch to a dissociative protocol with ego state therapy, so I find it invaluable. To show how much individual preferences play a part here, a colleague of mine doesn't use the lightbar, just uses auditory to take people to deeper levels. Some people prefer the tactile. In addition to therapist preferences, of course, there are client preferences for this or that modality. For several years I didn't have a permanent set up, travelled a lot, and used a low-tech extendable wand, which really reduced wear and tear on the arm without much investment. Once I got a permanent office again, I was very happy to invest in the equipment. Small price to pay to work minor miracles. In short, I think having options to offer clients is helpful. No matter which you choose, your investments will pay off well. (PS. I have no financial interest in any of the products)
