I would like to say as an EMDR therapist I respect many other therapeutic stances as having validity for those who respond to it. Studies of various therapeutic approaches have shown that the connection to ones therapist is more important to the outcome no matter what therapeutic technique was used. There is no one way fits all. What works for one person may not work for another. That's why we have so many different theories and therapeutic approaches.
I have found in my own experience with clients that EMDR moves a person quickly to alleviation of their acute symptoms more so than talking therapy. For some clients the rapid shift is too anxiety provoking and so going slower with talk therapy intersperced with EMDR is just right for them. Clinical judgement and experience are what every good therapist uses along with the tools. I have found EMDR to be a very valuable tool and many of my clients have benefitted from this technique.
For any clients considering EMDR, I say go educate yourself. Read all you can about EMDR and any other therapy your considering. Look back over past discussions in this forum and look for others using a critical mind and decide for yourself what's right for you.
